Classification of radio data signals
• Automatic Classification
• Extension to W51PC and W51LAN Decoders
• Fully Integrated into the WAVECOM user interface
The ability to rapidly identify unknown signals has increasingly become an essential requirement in signal analysis. WAVECOM W51CL efficiently supports professional radio surveillance. Signals of interest are rapidly and reliably captured and assessed for further processing by the WAVECOM W51PC or W51LAN decoder, which decodes more than 130 modes. The automation of the signal classification process relieves the operator from manual evaluation, which otherwise requires considerable skills and experience. The combination of a classifier and a decoder thus satisfies the requirement for an automatic system that is able to rapidly and reliably determine the characteristics of radio data transmissions within the signal spectrum being monitored.
General
The classifier is a software option for the professional versions of the WAVECOM W51PC and W51LAN decoders. The user interface of the WAVECOM W51CL classifier is fully integrated as a software module in the existing hardware and professional software.
The actual signal processing is executed on the W51PC decoder and the CPU of the PC. This ensures that the classifier will benefit from future PC technology performance enhancements. The input signal for the classifier is the receiver AF or IF signal with a maximum bandwidth of 5 kHz. To ensure that slow Morse transmissions are classified with adequate reliability, the data recording interval has been set to 1.6 seconds.
Screen Layout
The classifier display is divided into multiple windows each with a number of panes:

Spectrum Display
In this pane, the monitored frequency spectrum is displayed. After
classification has completed, the classified signals are indicated in the
spectrum display.

Classification
The results of the classification are shown as a list in a
second pane. The following parameters are provided for each classified signal:
•
•
Center frequency of the signal•
Number of carriers in the case of multicarrier FSK•
Baudrate in the case of FSK or PSK•
Frequency shift in the case of FSK•
Bandwidth•
Confidence level as a percentageAdditional information
Additional graphical FSK, MFSK and PSK information on symbol timing and constellation, baud rate and frequency vs. time is displayed in a separate window when a classified signal is selected from the list.
Code Check
A FSK code check of the classified signal may be initiated to further
determine the signal. After the code check has been completed, the determined
mode may be started.

Licensing The classifier option is only available to government agencies. To activate this option, an activation key for the professional version of the W51PC software is required. When ordering your activation key, please provide the serial number of the W51PC card or W51LAN for which the license is to be used.
Standalone Classifier A separate brochure for the standalone version of the classifier (including receiver control) is also available.
Technical Data
