Unused ports may be left open (Unterminated) in most applications, such as in standard monitoring using scanners and other similar receivers. Terminating unused ports into 50 ohms is required when specification for isolation and gain balance (flatness) must be held within 2dB from port-to-port and over frequency range. In large receiver monitoring platforms this will be an important issue.

Only a "Passive Multicoupler" will support a signal combining function. The "Active" multicouplers can not be used in "reverse", i.e. as a signal combiner.
